Building a Life of Purpose: Lessons from Mother Teresa and a Fallen Evergreen
In a world that often measures success by bottom lines and profit margins, Dan Cantillana is on a mission to redefine what it means to be an “investor”. In a recent episode of The Invested Life, Dan explores a powerful intersection of faith, business, and community through an unlikely pairing: Rooftops and Mother Teresa.
Redefining Your “Neighbor”
The core of Dan’s message centers on a famous quote from Mother Teresa: “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family”. While this starts at home, Dan challenges us to expand our definition of “family” and “neighbor” to include the marketplace.
Your neighbor isn’t just the person living on the parcel next to yours. In the context of a purpose-driven life, your neighbor is anyone you are in community with day in and day out—your team members, supervisors, vendors, and even the person in front of you at the grocery store or coffee shop.
Mastering the Art of Meaningful Connection: The FROG Acronym
How do we love our neighbors in a professional or casual setting without it feeling “weird”? Dan suggests moving past small talk about the weather and asking meaningful questions. To do this, he uses the FROG acronym:
-
F – Family: Ask people about their family
-
R – Recreation: Ask them about what they like to do for fun.
-
O – Occupation: You can ask them about their career or workplace.
-
G – Goals: This is Dan’s favorite, as asking about personal goals reveals a person’s heart and where they are currently in life.
By getting people to talk about themselves and their aspirations, you demonstrate that you are “for them” and invested in their success.
The Power of “Rooftop Prayers”
Dan introduces a concept called Rooftop Prayers—the practice of intentionally praying for everyone you “habitually share a rooftop with,” whether that is at home, in the office, or at school.
He practices this by maintaining a daily journal with a list of 76 people. Each day, he pairs these names with specific prayer prompts to pray blessings, hope, and healing over their lives. This practice shifts your perspective from passive consumption to active, eternal investment in others.
Community in the Storm: A Lesson from Port Orchard
To illustrate the power of community, Dan shares a personal story from his youth in Port Orchard, Washington. During a massive windstorm in November, a giant evergreen tree crashed through the roof of his best friend’s house while they were inside.
In the aftermath, the tragedy was eclipsed by the beauty of the neighborhood coming together. Neighbors spent the day cleaning each other’s yards, clearing driveways with chainsaws, and sharing meals cooked on camping stoves. This is the essence of Mother Teresa’s message: a community bonded by love and mutual support during the “storms” of life.
The 72-Hour Challenge
Dan concludes with his Law of 72: What will you do within the next 72 hours with the information provided? Knowledge is only valuable when put into action.
This week, try one of the following:
-
Initiate with 5–10 clients or people in your life just to ask how they are doing, with no business agenda.
-
Write three handwritten notes to express appreciation for others.
-
Start your own Rooftop Prayer list in a journal to pray for your community.
If you believe in loving what you do and doing what you love, you’re in the right place.
Protect. Provide. Promote.
