You Can’t Lead Where You Haven’t Gone: Biblical Principles of Leadership (Part 1)

Welcome to another edition of The Invested Life, where we explore the intersection of faith, business, and personal growth. In this opening episode of our three-part leadership series, host Dan Cantillana dives deep into what the Bible teaches about true leadership. The core message? You can’t lead where you haven’t gone yourself. Character comes before calling, and private obedience before public impact.

Why Leadership Starts in the Heart

Leadership isn’t about titles or positions—it flows from the heart. As Proverbs 4:23 reminds us: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Leadership flows from the heart. Your “why” starts there. How is your heart doing today? Are you anxious, sad, fearful, or full of joy? Take time to check in before chasing success.

Dan encourages listeners to love the people God has placed in their lives with everything they have. He shares his family’s “1-3-12” principle:

  • 1: Your best friend (for Dan, his wife Lisa)
  • 3: Solid, close friends
  • 12: Awesome associates and broader circle

Who fills these spots in your life? Leadership begins with serving those closest to you.

Faithfulness in the Little Things

Luke 16:10 declares: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.”

This eternal principle shows up everywhere—from your first job (starting with simple tasks) to bigger opportunities in business and ministry. Dan stresses the value of discipleship and mentorship:

  • Find a sage or mentor (someone 10–40 years ahead) who can speak truth into your life.
  • Be a mentor to others—invest in apprenticeship-style relationships.
  • Resist “new and now” culture; prioritize timeless principles over quick hacks.

Integrity when no one is watching is non-negotiable. True leaders own mistakes, confess, forgive, and improve. Dan admits he’s a “sinner saved by grace” but emphasizes getting back up and doing better.

Daily Disciplines for Lasting Leadership

Build spiritual and physical disciplines:

  • Start your day with 5–10 minutes of solitude (Dan meditates on God’s goodness).
  • Follow a Bible reading plan and read solid books (Dan recommends Momentum by Colin S. Smith on the Beatitudes).
  • Prioritize physical health: exercise, diet, water, rest, and activity like hiking or kayaking.

Jesus modeled this perfectly—He spent three years living life with His disciples before sending them out. He invited them: “Come, follow me.” Leadership is about investing time in relationships first.

A Real-Life Dan Can Musing: The Fishing Trip Sage

Dan shares a memorable family vacation story from years ago. On a trip to Omak, Washington, with his young sons, he bought fishing gear despite knowing little about it. An experienced camp owner (the “sage”) quietly pointed him to the perfect spot off a jetty. Result? The family caught 15–20 fish in a frenzy—creating a lifelong memory.

The lesson? Seek people who’ve “gone before you.” They want to help you succeed. Find your sages, and be one for others.

Final Thoughts & Call to Action

We’re all called to lead—whether at home, work, or church. Practice daily disciplines, initiate mentorships, and let others invest in you. Remember the Law of 72: Act within 72 hours to make this episode count.

You can’t lead others where you haven’t gone. Character before calling. Private obedience before public impact.
